This Sunday we talked about “appearances”. You can listen to it in a recording of our service here. God sees our inside, our true self; the world sees our outward appearance. In a world where we assign privilege and we discriminate based on appearances, the challenge for a Christian is how to make their outward appearance authentic to their inward self just as much as it is to see people beyond their outward appearances.
Please feel free to share your own experiences with appearances.
There can be many things affecting the behavior of a dog, I feel that the dogs that look scary are often treated as such and therefore they tend to become less friendly, whereas the dogs that evoke in us feelings of love tend to be more trusting. In other words, we shape the personality of a dog based on how we treat it. I believe it is the same with human beings. So, as Christians, I believe we must pay attention to how we are forming the personalities we interact with. Through our actions are we creating a world that understands co-existence? Or, do we like to be part of groups that are formed around likeness?
We as Table exist because we believe that there is room for everyone around the Lord’s Table. I love how our worship services both on Saturday and Sunday are made up of people of all appearances. We are also intimately aware of what exclusion feels like. In the coming days as we develop our identity, I pray that the sacramental act of having an outward appearance that speaks of the inward grace – our inward self – will be key to how we will be received in the world.
On a separate note, if you missed the Family Fest picnic, let not your hearts be troubled… on July 7th at 9AM join us for our Red, White and Blue Brunch following our Sunday morning Worship Service. Stay tuned for details.
